Audiences might listen to The Archers for a number of reasons. The Archers cover heavy topics and real issues that happen in todays society, this relates to the Personal Identity section of the Uses and Gratifications theory which explains that people use the internet and social media for four reasons, the topics covered could be relative to some issues in the audiences lives. For example #FreeHelen was a trending hashtag on social media that fans were using to express solidarity for one of the characters in The Archers who was battling domestic abuse, people use this hashtag to present their sympathy and to show they are struggling with similar things. People might also listen to The Archers for Social interaction, there are multiple online groups set up by the public as a safe space and for fans to talk to one-another and to express their love and enjoyment for the show with each other, ultimately creating a community to talk about the things they enjoy. Fans may also immerse themselves into The Archers community to seek help and advise about topics mentioned throughout the show, this directly links to the theory of uses and gratification as it comes under the subsection of information. For example, topics like modern slavery have been mentioned in The Archers and people may interact with other fans struggling with the same things and looking for information on how to combat them.

1. OFCOM regulates radio
2. Commercial and PSB - two other types of radio
3. The difference between commercial radio and PSB is commercial is funded by advertisements and sponsors. However, PSB is funded by the license fee and paid for by the public.
4. The BBC's remit is to educate, inform, and entertain. This relates into The Archers throughout all of those subjects. The remit inform fits into the mature subjects that are handled and spoken about in the. show. For example, the domestic violence topic is an ongoing subject throughout the show, the inclusion of these difficult but very real situations inform the public on real life problems which are in need of combat.
To educate fits into The Archers as the show was originally aired in 1951 to educate people on rural, farm life. The community in The Archers demonstrates the society and differences within urban and rural areas, and educates people in larger cities on other cultures within their country that they are not exposed to.
Entertainment is a large part of The Archers. The dramatic storyline and interesting characters gives the audience an opportunity to escape from their real life and experience living through a different perspective. The Domestic abuse subject is a relatable topic for many people...

2. One audience for The Archers - white middle aged women
