4. What information does a film poster need to convey.

5. Whats the difference between a teaser poster and theatrical poster.A teaser poster is an initial, minimal poster released for a movie to generate interest and anticipation.

A theatrical poster, on the other hand, is the primary poster released closer to the movie's release and contains more information, including cast names, release date, and sometimes more detailed imagery

6. Name a recent film franchise.
Fast and Furious

The main image in the poster largely consists of James Bond's silhouette with the majority important characters situated inside his outline, including the antagonist in the film. This is done to allow the viewer to find out a little information about the film and genre, but still leaving room for anticipation and mystery. Furthermore the use of Bonds outline to enclose all the other characters highlights the importance of James throughout the film and clearly states he is the main character. The women are in more revealing clothes than the men, suggesting sexualisation and objectification.

The colour palette of the poster connotes confliction through the juxtaposition of orange and blue, possibly foreshadowing a battle or action within the film. This subconsciously implies the genre of action to the viewership without specifically saying so.

The serif font used for the film title connotes a sense of maturity and sophistication, which is further backed up by the abundance of suits, ties, and dresses throughout the poster. However the blocky capitals suggest a modern look. This is done to capture more viewers and broaden the target demographic to a possibly younger audience.

MWTGG Film Poster and Media Language
LO: to analyse the film poster for key elements of Media Language.

Men with the important roles in the film.
Women are just a side character for James Bond.
Overly sexualised female characters.
Lack of diverse characters.

  • Released in 1974, only Moore's second appearance as James Bond.
  • Based on the book by Ian Fleming. Produces by EON.
  • Film had a 7 million dollar budget and grossed over 97 million US dollars according to the world wide box office.
  • Several kung fu scenes and the film was filmed predominantly in Asia.
  • 1973 energy crisis caused oil crisis. this is hinted at through the posters iconography of the power plant.
Overly sexualised women.
Minorities used as servants or comic relief.

1. They have used a montage of images to show the whole context of the movie and clearly show the action genre.
2. The connotations of Bond's gun and how it is facing the sky and not the threat (the golden gun) suggest it is primarily for style purposes, portraying his arrogance. His costume connotes discipline and sophistication, possibly done to contrast the overly sexualised women, portraying the juxtaposition of masculinity and femininity in the 1970's. Finally his stern facial expression paired with direct address further connotes discipline and masculinity as it shows a sense of confidence in Bond, and bestowing a sense of intimidation within the viewers.

Propp characters in the poster
- Hero, James Bond.
- Villain, MWTGG.
- Helper, Short man.

The film poster uses images to create meaning through the amplitude of different scenes presented. The montage of images placed around the centre piece, James Bond, portray the overall theme of action in the film. The placement of James Bond in the middle suggests he is the Hero within the storyline, possibly connoting the patriarchy within society in the 1970's. This is further supported by over sexualisation of the female characters.
